Sneak peek inside the City of Joondalup’s $9.1 million Craigie Leisure Centre upgrade

One of Perth’s long-established leisure centres is going from strength to strength following the completion of a major $9.1 million refurbishment in the northern suburbs.

In a first of its kind in WA leisure centres, equipment at the new-look Craigie Leisure Centre features improved technology, allowing around 4700 of its members to track and automatically adjust their workouts.

On Monday, The West Australian was given a first look into the completed two-year long project, which boasts a significant expansion of the gym area.

Doubling in size from 500sqm to 1200sqm, this will allow for new small group training at around 35 classes each week.

The 225sqm wellness studio replicates the group fitness studio, including stage, lighting and enhanced audio-visual features. This area will house a range of wellness and other group fitness classes.

As part of the facelift, the gym also features different coloured zones, new flooring, changerooms and lockers, a dozen TVs, a running track, dedicated 80sqm stretch area, and an all-abilities equipment.

More than 60 additional pieces of gym equipment have also been bought, including plate-loaded and pin-loaded machines.

First stages of the refurbishment was launched in April last year as members and visitors provided feedback over the past 12 months.

This initial component included the relocation and extension of the group fitness studio, cycle studio and creche, the formalisation of the overflow carpark area at the western end of the centre and additional parking on the northern side.

Now there are more parking bays – from 400 to over 550, including a dozen ACROD, 10 senior and 11 parents with pram bays.

City of Joondalup mayor Albert Jacob said the modern, spacious and aesthetically pleasing venue was now “one of the premier” community leisure and aquatic facilities in WA.

“This is a significant investment into the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our community,” he said.

“We are committed to fostering health and fitness opportunities for our residents and the wider community, and this refurbishment will ensure facilities at Craigie continue to keep pace with current and future industry trends.

“What won’t change at Craigie Leisure Centre is the people and the family-friendly environment. For more than three decades, this centre has been unmatched when it comes to the relationship between those who use our facilities and those who work here, our people.”

An open day will run on May 20 from 1pm to 4pm and include a free ‘Big Day Out’, giant pool inflatables and toys, bouncy castles, fairy floss and popcorn and family activities.
