Mentoring school kids to keep them happy, healthy and wise.
Mel chats with Jeromine Alpe.
A recent report by HealthStats NSW finds that 58% of school kids are unhappy and depressed, 65% are nervous and feel under pressure to perform, and 23% are being reprimanded because of behavioral issues. Counselors and mental health workers are not the answer. In fact, being called out of your classroom to see your counselor can cause more harm than good. Students deserve a sense of belonging at school – to leave strong and independent, knowing that it’s ok to show vulnerability. Think of someone who took a positive interest in you when you were at school. Who better than a trusted mentor who takes a personal interest providing one-on-one guidance, understanding and empathy? Mentoring in schools creates inclusive communities by building learning environments outside the classroom – a safe space for mentors to share what they know with students, and for students to learn from people they trust.
