‘It would be a spectacle’: Women’s sport advocate calls for five-set matches

A prominent women’s sport advocate is surprised female professional tennis players still don’t play a full five-set match at grand slams.

Former competitive tennis player, Sarah du Plessis, believes that in the days of ‘equal pay for equal play’, it’s surprising women don’t play a full five-set match.

“Every time the grand slams come around, it definitely comes up in conversation,” she told Perth LIVE.

“I certainly think they’re more than fit enough and it would be a spectacle.”

Prizemoney for winning the women’s draw is the same as winning the men’s, yet women play only three-set deciders.

The four Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S Open) are the only tennis tournaments where five-set matches are played.
